History of the Hotel School
Founded in September 1922 as the Hotel Department in Cornell's School of Home Economics in the New York State College of Agriculture, the now-renowned hospitality think tank that is part of one of the finest Ivy League universities had a modest start. The program was the first of its kind anywhere. It began with only 21 students under the direction of a single professor, Howard B. Meek.
In 1927, Ellsworth M. Statler, a self-made millionaire who founded the largest hotel chain of his day, was persuaded to attend the second Hotel Ezra Cornell (HEC) weekend organized by the Hotel Department students. When he first arrived, Statler was skeptical about the school's program. He believed individuals interested in a hospitality career could be better served by on-the-job training than by the sort of formal schooling provided at Cornell. By the end of the weekend, however, his mind had changed. To the crowd gathered for the HEC banquet, he said, "I'm converted. Meek can have any damn thing he wants."
His speech was perhaps one of the most meaningful in the history of the school. Although Statler died in 1928, just eleven months after he attended HEC, he and his wife became the school's greatest benefactors through provisions in Statler's will, which included the establishment of the Statler Foundation. Over the years, the foundation has provided millions of dollars to the school for support of teaching, research, scholarships, and facilities.
During the 20 years following Statler's visit to Cornell, the Hotel Department established a standard for excellence in the hospitality industry, and it grew steadily. In 1948, the Statler Foundation contributed the funds to build the original Statler Hall, including Statler Inn, a fifty-room practice-management laboratory. The university established a full-fledged School of Hotel Administration two years later and in 1986 built the 150-room Statler Hotel and J. Willard Marriott Executive Education Center on the site of the original inn.
